# Transparency Modes

> Control when cursor items are visible — always, only while moving, only while still, or a custom blend with configurable fade timing.

Transparency modes let you control when Proximate's cursor items are visible based on whether your mouse is moving or still. This keeps the overlay informative when you need it and out of the way when you don't.

## Presets

Choose a preset in **Settings → Appearance → Transparency**:

| Preset                       | Behavior                                                                                                                  |
| ---------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Always Visible** (default) | Items are fully opaque at all times.                                                                                      |
| **Only Visible When Moving** | Items appear while you move the mouse and fade away when you stop. Good if you only want a quick glance while navigating. |
| **Only Visible When Still**  | Items fade out while the mouse is moving and reappear when you pause. Keeps your view clear during active work.           |
| **Custom**                   | Set your own transparency levels for still and moving states using the sliders below.                                     |

## Transparency Sliders

Two sliders appear below the presets at all times:

* **Still transparency** (0–100%) — How visible items are when the cursor is not moving.
* **Motion transparency** (0–100%) — How visible items are while the cursor is in motion.

Adjusting either slider automatically switches the preset to whichever one matches — or to **Custom** if no preset fits.

  The best way to find the right transparency setup is to try each preset for a while and see which one fits how you work. You can always fine-tune from there.

## Advanced Settings

Click the **Advanced** disclosure below the sliders to reveal three timing controls:

* **Fade duration** (100–2000 ms, default 400 ms) — How long the fade transition takes.
* **Idle delay** (100–3000 ms, default 500 ms) — How long to wait after the mouse stops before fading to the still transparency level.
* **Movement threshold** (1–20 px, default 5 px) — Minimum pixels of cursor movement required to count as "moving." Prevents small jitters from triggering a transition.

Changing any advanced setting automatically switches the preset to **Custom**.

Use **Reset to Defaults** at the bottom to restore all transparency settings to their defaults (Always Visible, both sliders at 100%, default timing values).
