# Proximate Update Notifications and Installing Updates

> Learn how Proximate notifies you about a new version and how to install the update from the menu bar or taskbar on macOS and Windows.

Proximate checks for updates automatically and downloads them in the background. You can control how and when updates are installed.

## Update Checks

Proximate checks for a new version shortly after launch and then approximately every 24 hours while running. When an update is available, it is downloaded in the background without interrupting your work.

## Installing Updates

By default, Proximate installs downloaded updates the next time you quit the app. When you relaunch, you'll be running the new version.

### Auto-Install (Optional)

If you prefer updates to install as soon as they're ready, enable **auto-install** in **Settings → Updates**:

* When an update finishes downloading and auto-install is enabled, a **60-second countdown** appears near your cursor (if the countdown option is on).
* When the countdown reaches zero, Proximate quits and installs the update, then relaunches automatically.
* You can **dismiss** the countdown to skip that particular update's auto-install — it will install the next time you quit manually instead.
* If the countdown option is off, the update installs quietly after a brief delay.

## Update Failures

If Proximate is unable to check for updates after several consecutive attempts, a notification will appear letting you know. This is usually caused by a temporary network issue and resolves on its own.

  If you installed Proximate through **Setapp**, updates are managed by Setapp and Proximate's built-in updater is disabled.
